Foundation Primer. What? Why? What Type?
One of the most common questions I get asked when doing makeup is, “OOOH WHAT IS THAT?” and I am almost always applying a primer.
Another one of the most common questions I get asked is, “How do I get my makeup to last longer every day?”
WELL…in attempt to achieve flawless foundation application that lasts much longer, it is more than necessary to use a primer.
So why should I use a foundation primer might you ask?
A primer will help combat and visually correct different skin types –from dry to oily to acne prone to aged skin, a primer helps to mask the “imperfections”. In addition to making your skin look smoother, the primer will also help your foundation stay on and look better for a longer period of time.
Good primers can also:
- Fill in lines and pores
- Smooth uneven texture
- Illuminate and brighten skin
The best foundation primers
- In my previous post (on how to curb oily skin) I recommend my favorite primer for Oily and Acne Prone skin.
- For dry and/or mature skin, you will want to use a primer that is a little bit thicker so that it hydrates your skin. You can try Laura Mericer Hydrating Primer or the Smashbox Hydrating Primer.
- For a flawless finish and smooth foundation application on ANY skin, my holy grail is Smashbox Photo Finish.
Step 1: prep the skin
Step 2: apply your moisturizer
Step 3: apply your primer
Step 4: After you have your foundation primer on you can apply your foundation!

Thanks for including specific product recommendations–it really helps!
Love this! What if your “foundation” is your tinted moisturizer? Should I put on the primer before or after the tinted moisturizer? Thank you.
Hey Jen! Great question! What brand/type of tinted moisturizer do you use? This will help me better answer that for you! 🙂
